LawnChair Theatre - 2006-2021
What it was.
We began, almost by accident, as a (mostly) youth theatre production of Midsummer Night’s Dream in Port Chester’s Lyon Park. By 2021, we had evolved into Westchester’s only free outdoor summer traveling Shakespeare company.
We produced 13 Shakespearean plays, 1 summer Cabaret (Shakespeare and the Beatles, during COVID), and 3 winter cabarets. With the exception of one beautiful production of Romeo & Juliet, we focused on the comedies.
We built an inclusive, multi-generational family of artists and helpers, and performed in parks and venues in Bedford, Chappaqua, New Rochelle, Port Chester, Rye, and Darien, Ct.
On performance days, we rolled up in a rented truck and a line of cars, unloaded and set up a stage, dressing rooms tents, lighting and sound equipment, and performed until just after sunset. Then, after all hands participated in the load out, we would retire to a local watering hole. The next day, we would do it again, It took every bit of our energy, and it was well worth it.
In addition to funding by corporate sponsors and generous friends, we accepted audience donations, and sold advertising to vendors in the form of bespoke Shakespearean sonnets delivered during intermission by our performers.
We have a lifetime of sweet memories, and undying gratitude for the dozens of beautiful people who took part, for the vendors and underwriters who made it possible, and, especially, for our audiences.
